Preserving the Past – Environmental Monitoring in a Museum

Client Challenge:
A historic museum, housed across three thick-walled Victorian buildings, needed to ensure the preservation of priceless artifacts and temporary exhibits. With two public exhibition spaces and one storage facility, maintaining stable environmental conditions was critical—not only for conservation but also to meet their duty of care and compliance obligations.

The Solution:
A network of up to 16 precision sensors was installed to monitor ambient temperature and humidity across all three facilities. These sensors provide continuous data, ensuring that both displayed and stored items remain within strict environmental thresholds.

Why It Works:
The robust construction of the buildings posed a challenge for signal transmission, but the system was designed to overcome these limitations while delivering reliable, real-time monitoring. This allows the museum to:

  • Demonstrate diligence in caring for loaned and permanent collections
  • Maintain optimal conditions for sensitive materials
  • Provide documentation for audits and insurance purposes

Impact:
With this system in place, the museum now benefits from:

  • Peace of mind knowing environmental risks are minimized
  • Improved conservation outcomes for delicate artifacts
  • Stronger credibility when hosting high-value or sensitive exhibits
